CEA (Carcinoembryonic antigen) is a protein produced by the embryo during its development. It is not normally found in the blood of adults. However, CEA levels are high in many types of cancers of colon, rectum, ovary, breast & pancreas. It is also raised in non-cancer conditions like stomach ulcers, colitis, cirrhosis and benign breast disease. Tumor marker for colorectal cancer monitoring- Used to assess treatment response in cancer patients- Helps in detecting cancer recurrence posttreatment- May be elevated in other cancers like lung, breast, and pancreatic.
