AFP is a protein produced mainly in the liver but can be produced by certain cancers of liver, testis and ovary. This is a screening test in the blood which is done if there is suspicion of a certain type of cancer in your body. It also helps to monitor your condition once the treatment starts. Helps diagnose hepatocellular carcinoma and germ cell tumors- Aids in monitoring response to cancer treatment- Supports screening for fetal neural tube defects in pregnancy- Assists in evaluating liver diseases such as cirrhosis and hepatitis.
