G6PD is an enzyme in your body which is needed by the red blood cells to function. If there is deficiency of this enzyme in your body, the red blood cells break down at a fast rate and cause anemia. You inherit this deficiency from your parents. Women who carry a defective gene can pass this deficiency to their children. They do not suffer but act as carriers. Men with defective gene always suffer from hemolytic anemia.
